THE JOURNAL
February 2022

This month we're talking all things tortoise shell and how to add interest and pattern to any space using this classic motif.

Like animal print, tortoise shell is incredibly versatile and acts like a neutral. It goes with everything and works anywhere – any colour scheme and design style from modern to traditional.

It has been widely used since the 17th Century and was originally obtained from Hawkbill Turtles. Thankfully, real tortoise shell is illegal and modern technology means the look is easy to replicate. So, why not give this eye-catching accent a chance by adding elements to your home?

Feeling a little daunted about adding such a bold element to your home? The beauty of tortoise shell is that it’s best used in small doses so it's a great place to start.

Candle Holders

Candle holders are a fuss-free way of adding elements of the pattern into your home.

The tortoise shell motif gives a golden glow, creating instant warmth. These are best styled in groups with different sizes sitting side-by-side.

Vases

There is nothing worse than unsightly stems but the great thing about tortoise shell is that the darker colour and irregular pattern hides them, for a faultless, floral display.

At this time of year, there is nothing more striking than tulips in a tortoise shell vase.

We are particularly fond of Parrot Tulips with their twisted, ruffled petals and flame-like splashes of colour.

Tumblers

Still nervous about answering the call of the wild? Then our handcrafted Tortu tumblers are an easy place to start.

The classic pattern means they can be used year-round with any colour scheme, any table setting,  indoors and out.  What could be more versatile?

Adding bold pattern accents to your home can feel overwhelming but, we promise you’ll love it and, it will be with you for many years to come.

So go on, take a walk on the wild side.
